When the spokesman says...

"The governor hopes this closing will move Missourians to consider alternatives to abortion so that our state can move forward in embracing a culture that values human life."

he's living in a pipe-dream. I feel so much sorrow for the women of Missouri. Even their health-care providers are turning away from them.

North of Austin, the only clinics in the state are in Waco (first trimester only) and Dallas-Ft. Worth. That means that we see hundreds of women every year who have had to drive much farther than 160 miles. Abortion is still available to 24 weeks in Missouri clinics, but not so in our much larger state of Texas. Since HB15 went into effect last year, there are only three facilities in the entire state -- one each in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio -- that can provide abortion after 15 weeks of gestation. And of course the cost is tripled in an ambulatory surgical center, so for most women the law amounts to a de facto ban, as was intended. I'd say that, all things considered, women are still better off in Missouri.

We can help the Lilith Fund provide equal access for the women of Katrina in Texas
