Indiana repubs are trying to make it a criminal act for lesbians and single women to get pregnant!

From Ductape Fatwa at boo tribune:

Republican lawmakers are drafting new legislation that will make marriage a requirement for motherhood in the state of Indiana, including specific criminal penalties for unmarried women who do become pregnant "by means other than sexual intercourse."

According to a draft of the recommended change in state law, every woman in Indiana seeking to become a mother throu gh assisted reproduction therapy such as in vitro fertilization, sperm donation, and egg donation, must first file for a "petition for parentage" in their local county probate court.

Only women who are married will be considered for the "gestational certificate" that must be presented to any doctor who facilitates the pregnancy. Further, the "gestational certificate" will only be given to married couples that successfully complete the same screening
process currently required by law of adoptive parents.

This infuriates me! They have no effing business determining who can and can't have a baby!
This is another attempt to encode Christian morality in the law! I hate these Nazis!

After years of gradual encroachment, they're finally to the point of attaining a death grip on abortion rights, and they figure it's safe to implement phase two -- control of all reproduction.

The nominal Democrats who have helped them get this far must be feeling warm and fuzzy all over.

Lauren at Feministe has a post up on this bill that also contains contact information for Ms. Miller.

Holy Shit, Indiana

For those of you who haven't been following every detail, this is my home state -- not born here but pretty damned well raised. I've suffered through and been witness to a lot of stupid law in the last few years, but this one takes the cake.

Legislator drops controversial plan

A controversial proposed bill to prohibit gays, lesbians and single people from using medical procedures to become pregnant has been dropped by its legislative sponsor.

State Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, issued a one-sentence statement this afternoon saying: 'The issue has become more complex than anticipated and will be withdrawn from consideration by the Health Finance Commission.'?

I have to wonder how much, if any, the negative online publicity effected this recent move. I know that planned parenthood and the Indiana Civil Liberties Union was all over it but this story raced through blogistan in the last several days. It was posted at boomantribune by ductapefatwa and in the thread booman stated:

this is probably the most heavily linked diary in the history of BT.

Blogs Kill Bad Legislation

This story was covered by numerous blogs and because of it, Miller received a tremendous amount of unwelcome publicity, phone calls, and emails which obviously led to her backing down.

This isn't the first time this has happened. Earlier this year, a Virginia legislator called John Cosgrove introduced a bill that would have

Unbelievable....simply unbelievable. What about unmarried teens? What are they going to do, slap everyone in jail for being pregnant outside wedlock? Talk about an overcrowded prison system!
Ugh!

In passing, also, I would like to say that the first time Adam had a chance he laid the blame on a woman."

Yeah I agree with HeretiCheck this is some major b(BEEP)hit who well I don't need to ask who because there is obviously a state trying to make a law like this, since when would anyone have to be married to have kids. Regardless of age teen or adult etc why can't people be with each other and decide to have a kid before getting married or maybe not get married for a while but still have a kid? Whether the couple are married the child can still call his mom mom and dad dad. There are a lot of other situations that call for people to go to a marriage counselor and this isn't one of them if the couple is happy then their happy and not the county state or federal government should be in the way of them having a kid.

So its just peachy that a woman gets pregnant, so long as there's a husband, even if the husband is not the father.
