Curse of the coalitionswords by Stephanie posted August 26, 2005 - 8:22pm
So this is my first post over here on Our Blog and I apologize if this has been discussed already but I saw this post over at the Mother Jones Blog and thought it was relevant and interesting: The truth about the yellow dog I think it's worth reading because it kind of summarizes how I'm starting to feel about the Democrats and the Kos mentality in general. It even references a certain well-known Kos posting. From the comments, I thought this was interesting:
So, I actually hadn't heard that. Is this true? I'll admit that the ERA isn't exactly high on my list of priorites at this particular moment (I've got bigger fish to fry right now) but it seems like it's a pretty significant shift as far as women's rights go. Well, regardless, it has me thinking ... Kos rants and raves about the curse of single issue groups like NARAL and perhaps he even makes a decent point ... but what I'm starting to realize is that the curse of coalitions and parties is this: they can drop your cause at a moment's notice. That makes me a bit nervous, especially when even Hillary has been pandering. And they wonder why we don't just fall in line ... UPDATE: I've finally located the Democratic party platforms from 2000 and from 2004 - thanks to Diane at MoJo blog. Both are pdfs: 2004 Democratic National Platform Indeed, the ERA has been removed. Though to their credit, Ted Kennedy and Carolyn Maloney did go through the motions of introducing ERA legislation in congress earlier this year. But I'd still like to know why it was removed from the official platform. ( words about: politics )
![]() thanks for bringing that article to our attention! don't know if you're aware of this but the author, diane dees, has a blog too: http://dedspace.blogspot.com/ glad to see you posting here! (1)
I actually have a blog myself though I've stopped posting there for the time being. Some of my readers are loyal Democrats (and of the Kos mentality) ... while I'm seriously considering re-registering Green or independent. The constant rightward shift is unappealing. (1)
I'm glad you posted this, Stephanie -- thanks for the link, since I don't remember to check MoJo as often as I should, and thanks for your thoughts. I no longer identify as a Democrat. They won't stand firm on a single thing that actually matters to me -- women's issues, LGBT issues, civil liberties, the war -- and I can't in good conscience contribute to a party that routinely betrays my values. I've heard plenty of progressives tsk-tsking at moderate Republicans like Snowe and Collins for not standing up to their party bosses, but aren't we doing the same thing when we resign ourselves to the Dems pushing anti-choice candidates like Casey? I will donate to, and vote for, candidates who will actually represent me, but not to a party infrastructure that wants my vote and my money but shows contempt for my ideas, my voice and my principles. My city has a mayoral primary coming up next month. There are three serious candidates in the running: the incumbent, a Democrat; a city council member who's also a Dem; and a Green candidate. The primary is non-partisan and neither of the D candidates has gotten a party endorsement. I will be voting Green. (1)
Thanks for this Stephanie. I didn't think anything would suprise me anymore, but I am dumbfounded by this. I think it's time for feminists to abandon the Dems in droves. To hell with them. (1)
