Wendryn's blog*good* South Dakota newswords by Wendryn posted March 23, 2006 - 12:14pm
From http://brutalwomen.blogspot.com/ (go below the fold for contact information for this great lady): The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Cecilia Fire Thunder, was incensed (at the SD abortion ban). A former nurse and healthcare giver she was very angry that a state body made up mostly of white males, would make such a stupid law against women. 'To me, it is now a question of sovereignty,'? she said to me last week. 'I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.'? Christmas memorieswords by Wendryn posted December 19, 2005 - 7:23pm
My family had a somewhat odd way of dealing with Christmas. First of all, everyone always wrote Christmas lists so relatives who did not know us well could get the right thing for the right child, as there were four of us in the family. My grandfather almost invariably had brown socks on his list, so whenever I can't think of a present for someone I am always tempted to buy them brown socks. They wouldn't understand, of course, so I have not yet given in to the urge. The lead up to Christmas was actually fairly short, as we never got a Christmas tree before Christmas Eve. We brought it home December 24 and kept it up until 12th Night, January 6, which was the official end of the Christmas season in our household. ( words about: celebrations )
Body imagewords by Wendryn posted November 29, 2005 - 2:03pm
I grew up knowing I was a fat child. My paternal grandmother, a woman with incredibly strong opinions, made a fuss on a regular basis about how I was not as feminine as my younger sister and how I should really lose weight to look more like my sister. I inherited my fathers bones and build; I'm short, solid, and strong. My sister is very delicate, very small, lightly built, and much more likely to wear pretty things than I ever was. I much preferred my blue jeans and t-shirt. I spent part of Thanksgiving week visiting my mother and maternal grandmother, and one of the things they did was pull out picture albums to show my fiance. I realized, looking at these pictures, that I had not been a fat child. I was not even chubby. My constant skateboarding helped, I'm sure, as did our father's insistence that we run every morning, which I hated. As I was growing up, though, I was not as fast as my siblings, and strength did not matter as much as being quick. ( words about: relationships )
